Footbridge at the junction of Sham Mong Road and Tonkin Street West in Sham Shui Po - Highly Commended Award of the "NEC Contract of the Year 2019"
Date of Award: 17/06/2019
The footbridge system at the junction of Sham Mong Road and Tonkin Street West was completed and open to the public in December 2019. Before completion of the footbridge, the public used at-grade pedestrian crossings. With the gradual completion of property development above MTR Nam Cheong Station and public housing development at North West Kowloon Reclamation Area Site 6 (Hoi Tat Estate), the pedestrian flow across the junction would increase. In view of this, CEDD commenced the construction of the above-mentioned footbridge system in September 2016. The footbridge would enhance the connectivity of new and existing developments and facilities (including MTR Nam Cheong Station) in the vicinity, the walking environment and road safety. The project also facilitates enhancement of the traffic capacity of the junction.
The project adopted "New Engineering Contract" (NEC) form and upheld "collaborative partnership" spirit during implementation. CEDD, the Contractor, the Engineer and resident site staff worked collaboratively to reduce project risks and disputes through risk reduction meetings and early warning mechanism. The project team's efforts and achievements in adopting NEC were recognized by the industry. The Contract won the Highly Commended Award of the "NEC Contract of the Year 2019" presented by the Institution of Civil Engineers of United Kingdom.
