Tung Chung New Town Extension – the Revitalisation of Tung Chung Stream project was awarded the 2024 Edmund Hambly Medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers, U.K.
Date of Award: 11/10/2024
We were honoured that the "Revitalisation of Tung Chung Stream" project of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) has been awarded the 2024 Edmund Hambly Medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), U.K. on 11 October 2024 for creative design for sustainable development and mitigating and adapting to climate change.
Tung Chung Stream (TCS) is designated as one of the "Ecologically Important Stream" in Hong Kong. Being part of the Tung Chung New Town Extension Contract No. NL/2020/06, the "Revitalisation of Tung Chung Stream" project was assessed to be an outstanding example of sustainable development that effectively supports both ecological conservation and community development. The project has been restoring a 600-metre long downstream channelized section of the TCS to its natural setting and develops a 415-metre long revitalised section together with the open space along both sides of TCS into the Tung Chung River Park, which is the first of its kind in Hong Kong, to promote water-friendly culture and activities. The revitalisation works re-establishes ecological connections between the upstream and downstream of TCS. To promote conservation and enrich visitors' experience, a visitor centre with various exhibits for eco-education will be set up at the Tung Chung River Park. Over 40 native plant species will be planted to beautify the environment and boost biodiversity.
The "Revitalisation of Tung Chung Stream" project, being recognised by overseas professional institution, demonstrates CEDD's efforts in combating climate change and our achievements in fostering sustainable development over the years.
