「深港蓮塘/香園圍口岸及配套東部過境交通樞紐」Project - Awarded the 20th Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize
Date of Award: 22/10/2024
The "深港蓮塘/香園圍口岸及配套東部過境交通樞紐" project has been awarded the 20th Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize for the outstanding achievements of the Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) project in the area of technological innovation and application on 22 October 2024.
In the project, the Civil Engineering and Development Department is responsible for the construction of 11 km long "Heung Yuen Wai Highway" connecting the BCP including the longest land-based road tunnel in Hong Kong - 4.8 km long Lung Shan Tunnel. During excavation of the tunnel tube, new technology was used. When the tunnel boring machine (TBM) finished its excavation of the southbound tunnel tube, it was dismantled into 5 components, which were turned around in 180 degrees one by one using a huge turntable inside an artificial cavern in 3 months. After re-assembling, the TBM continued its excavation of the northbound tunnel. This method, involving massive plant and complicated operation, was adopted the first time in Hong Kong.
Established by the China Civil Engineering Society and the Beijing Tien-yow Jeme Foundation for Development of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering, the Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize commends civil engineering projects with outstanding achievements in technological innovation and application.
