Abstract

The Yuen Long - Tuen Mun Eastern Corridor project involves the construction by the Highways Department of a 7 km-long dual two-lane trunk road. The geology of the project area is complex and locally highly variable, giving rise to various concerns in relation to the design of bridge foundations, not the least being the occurrence of buried marble containing cavities.

Detailed ground investigation included numerous deep boreholes and an extensive programme of laboratory testing of rock samples was carried out. Data obtained in this project was given in this publication along with an outline of the approach to the design of bored piles. This should serve as a useful source of information for other project involving deep foundations in the Yuen Long - Tune Mun area.
