Author : Halcrow Asia Partnership Ltd.

Abstract

This GEO Report consists of four Landslide Study Reports on the investigation of selected slope failures that occurred in 1997. The investigations were carried out by Halcrow Asia Partnership Ltd (HAP) for the Geotechnical Engineering Office as part of the 1997 Landslip Investigation Consultancy.

Section 1 of this report presents the findings of a detailed study of a landslide (GEO Incident No. K97/8/1) which occurred on 3 August 1997 and involved the collapse of an old rubble facing (stone pitching) on a soil/rock cut slope behind St. Joseph's Anglo Chinese School, Kwun Tong Road, Ngau Tau Kok. Debris from the landslide accumulated in a narrow walkway between the slope and the back of the school. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

Section 2 of this report presents the findings of a detailed study of a landslide (GEO Incident No. MW97/7/9) which occurred on 2 July 1997 on a cut slope opposite Block 3 Bayview Gardens, on Castle Peak Road near Tsuen Wan. Debris from the landslide blocked the pavement and both lanes of Castle Peak Road. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

Section 3 of this report presents the findings of a detailed study of a landslide (GEO Incident No. ME97/7/51) that occurred sometime between 2 and 3 July 1997 on the natural hillside opposite Shing On Temporary Housing Area, Ma On Shan. The landslide affected an abandoned cut slope and two fill platforms. Debris from the landslide accumulated on a gently sloping grassed area adjacent to a footpath/bicycle track at the toe of the hillside. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

Section 4 of this report presents the findings of a detailed study of two landslides (GEO Incident Nos. MW97/5/6 and MW97/6/21) which occurred on 8 May 1997 and 4 June 1997. The incidents were located on rock cut slopes adjacent to Kwai Chung Road, Lai King. Landslide debris from Incident No. MW97/5/6 blocked one lane of the Kowloon-bound carriageway causing disruption to traffic flow, whilst debris from Incident No. MW97/6/21 accumulated at the toe of the slope. No fatalities or injuries were reported.
